In YouTube Years…

youtube

So, I used MATHS earlier (I know?!) to figure out that if the ‘72 hours of video footage is uploaded to YouTube every minute‘ theory has been true since it launched the Partner Program in 2007, then we’ve uploaded 36,215 YEARS worth of footage to the site in 8 years*.

On a human history timeline working backwards, this predates pottery, domesticated dogs, and almost the first ever cave paintings.

At the current rate, it’ll only take 27 years of uploading to have uploaded more footage (in years) to YouTube than humans have existed (200,000 years), but realistically it will be quicker than that because…

*The 72 hours per minute fact was revised to 100 hours per minute last year [which I’ve factored into my 36,215 figure]. If this continues to increase, we’ll hit 200,000 years of footage much sooner than 27 years.

I AM FASCINATED. Maybe I’ll make an infographic.

End of post. As you were.

Illustrator

I attended two courses this week for Adobe Illustrator. Bizarrely, it’s not a program I’ve used before, even though I edit using Premiere and use Photoshop daily for work. There were some development opportunities available in my team, though, so I thought it might be interesting to take a formal approach to learning the program rather than my usual self-teaching.

I was surprised how good the course was!

I was also retrospectively shocked at how much time I’d spent trying to hack Photoshop to do what Illustrator is built to do: design. It was a real eye-opening course which set my mind off in a million directions on what I could create next. So whilst I come to terms with it, I’d like to share with you the first object I’ve designed with my new knowledge: a sparkly diamond, because… why not? I’m happy with it. It looks sexy.

Video Kit

werk

Today saw the unboxing of a huge amount of new video equipment I ordered for our Corp Comms team; this afternoon was essentially a work-related Christmas, filled with the unwrapping of new toys.

I have a lot to work out with the new DSLR, but I’m immediately satisfied by the new lights I bought. We trialed our first three-point light set up (two box lights, and a spot behind) which elevated the quality of the to-camera pieces immensely. One of the new lenses, a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8, yielded such a gorgeous picture that tears unconsciously graced my cheeks.

Whilst I mainly do internal video comms for work, the beauty of this equipment is that it’s professional level quality; external facing videos are on the agenda for this quarter so expect me to be able to share some of the results with you soon!

Side note: I got up early and made my own breakfast (that wasn’t cereal) for the first time in years today. Scrambled eggs, avocado, and beans on an English muffin. I was so proud I almost became one of those Instagram food photographers… but my hunger prevented us all from that fate.

Obligation

There’s a lot of pressure that comes with writing an inaugural blog post, and the truth is – I don’t fancy taking it on. Instead, let’s pretend that this is my second post. You can read this on the assumption that I’ve already explained what this blog is all about; you know what to expect at this point, don’t you? Sure you do!

I’m glad we got that cleared up. So on that note, welcome back.

I frequently joke about this video being seasonally inappropriate, but it really is. There’s no other time of year, other than the run up to the 31st December, that I can plug this. So I hope you enjoy it. I’ll see you in 2015!
